Re-assessing Neurodevelopmental Conditions: Clinical Implications of removing diagnosis in ADHD and Autism in Adult Psychiatry

Event Information

This presentation will examine clinical scenarios wherein an established diagnosis of ADHD or autism is deemed incorrect by a subsequent assessing psychiatrist. It addresses the clinical governance challenges involved in formally overturning historical diagnoses within general psychiatric practice when inter-clinician disagreement occurs. The session outlines an objective framework for managing diagnostic reversals, communicating with patients, and safely overseeing the cessation of associated pharmacological treatments.

Key Learning Objectives

  • To identify clinical indicators and discrepancies in patient histories that suggest an initial assessment of ADHD or autism was incorrect.
  • To navigate the clinical governance and inter-professional complexities that arise when a reviewing clinician disputes an existing diagnosis
  • To formulate a safe clinical pathway for diagnostic review
